Best AI writing tools for work

The best AI writing tool depends on where you write, so this list groups nine tools by use: any app, email, voice, chat and marketing teams. We make Scrubbr, so it comes first and has its own "where it falls short"; every fact about another tool comes from that tool's own pages.

Any app

Any app: one tool where your cursor is

For one AI writing tool in every app on a Mac or Windows PC, start with these two.

Scrubbr (we make it)

  • Best for: writing in any app with a text cursor, such as Gmail, Slack, Notion, Google Docs and LinkedIn. Hold Option (Alt on Windows) and speak, and it writes as you, using your email, chat, calendar, meeting notes, CRM and knowledge base.
  • Where it falls short: it is a desktop app for Mac and Windows, so it runs on those two systems only. There is no free plan after the trial.
  • Price: $15 a month, or $12 a month billed annually ($144 a year). Free for 3 days with no card; add a card for 7 more days.

Grammarly

  • Best for: fixing spelling, grammar and tone, and rewriting what you wrote. Its features page says it "works across 1 million + apps and websites", with desktop apps for Windows and Mac and browser extensions.
  • Where it falls short: its pages describe correcting and rewriting your writing. We did not see its pages say it reads your email, calendar, Slack or CRM to write a draft.
  • Price: Free ($0, 100 AI prompts a month). Pro is $12 a member each month on annual billing, or $30 on monthly billing.

Email

Email: tools that work in your inbox

These two focus on Gmail and Outlook.

Fyxer

  • Best for: an assistant that sorts your Gmail or Outlook inbox, drafts replies in your tone and writes up Google Meet and Microsoft Teams calls.
  • Where it falls short: its pages place it in Gmail and Outlook, and we did not see a desktop app or a write-at-your-cursor feature. Its plan table shows no tone-matched automatic replies on the Free plan.
  • Price: Free ($0, 400 credits a month). Pro is $37 a person a month billed annually. Every sign-up starts with a 14-day trial.

Superhuman (Mail and Go)

  • Best for: Superhuman Mail is an AI-native email app for Gmail or Outlook, and its Email Assistant drafts replies "in your voice". Superhuman Go runs on the Mac and Windows desktop app and in Chrome and Edge, and puts AI "on your cursor" in any app. Grammarly is now part of the Superhuman suite.
  • Where it falls short: its plan table marks "AI prompts and chat at your cursor" as Beta, with limited access on Free. Its pages do not say which systems Mail itself runs on.
  • Price: Mail-only plans start at $25 a member a month billed annually (superhuman.com/plans/mail). Its suite plans are Free ($0) and Pro at $12 a month billed annually or $15 billed monthly, and they cover Grammarly, Docs and Go. Mail is included from Business, at $33 a member a month billed annually.

Voice

Voice: tools you speak into

These two turn speech into text where your cursor is.

Wispr Flow

  • Best for: dictation in any app. Its site says "Flow works anywhere you can type", in over 100 languages, on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android.
  • Where it falls short: input is by voice, and we saw no email, calendar or Slack context on its pages. Its Free plan limits the words you can dictate each week.
  • Price: Free ($0). Pro is $15 a user a month, or $12 a month billed annually.

Lemon

  • Best for: speaking prompts into AI apps. It calls itself "the voice-to-prompt AI" for ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor and other AI apps, and it also does plain dictation, on Mac and Windows.
  • Where it falls short: its privacy policy names Google services as connections (Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Drive and Google Contacts). We did not see Outlook, Slack or Teams.
  • Price: "Free to start", with no credit card. We saw no paid plan on its pages.

Chat

Chat: assistants you talk with

These two are chat assistants. You work in their window, then move the result to the app where you write.

ChatGPT

  • Best for: working through a question or a long draft in a chat. It has a desktop app for macOS, Windows and Linux, and OpenAI's docs describe a Gmail plugin and a Slack plugin. It also has Memory and Projects.
  • Where it falls short: we did not see it inserting text at your cursor in other apps on OpenAI's pages.
  • Price: Free ($0), Go $8 a month, Plus $20 a month, and Pro from $100 a month.

Claude

  • Best for: thinking and drafting in a chat. Its desktop app runs on macOS, Windows and Linux (beta). Connectors for Slack, Gmail, Google Calendar and Microsoft 365 are available on every plan, and Free includes memory.
  • Where it falls short: Claude Desktop is a chat window, and its pages do not describe writing into other apps at your cursor.
  • Price: Free ($0). Pro is $17 a month on an annual plan, or $20 billed monthly. Max is $100 a month.

Marketing teams

Marketing teams: a Jasper alternative

If you tried Jasper and want AI inside the apps you already use, in your brand voice, read this section first.

Jasper

  • Best for: marketing teams that want every output to follow their brand voice. Its home page calls Jasper "the AI operating system for enterprise marketing teams", and its Brand Voice page says it flags tone that is off-brand. It adds a Chrome or Edge browser extension and an integrations marketplace with Webflow, Google Docs and Slack.
  • Where it falls short: its pages aim at marketing teams, not individual writers or general email. We did not see a Mac or Windows desktop app, or email and CRM context, on its pages.
  • Price: Pro is priced per seat, with a 7-day free trial. See Jasper's pricing page for the current figure.

If your brand voice and product facts live in a guide and a few documents, Scrubbr is the alternative to try. It writes at your cursor in LinkedIn, Webflow and Google Docs, and its knowledge base holds your product facts and your brand voice guide.

Method

How we wrote this list

We make Scrubbr, so we wrote this page with a bias, and we say so. There are no scores, no stars and no ranking. Each entry has the same three lines: best for, where it falls short and price.

Every fact about another tool comes from that tool's own pages, checked on the date in the sources below. Where we could not read a price with its billing period, we link to the page instead of printing a number. Where we did not see a feature, we say "we did not see it". That is not the same as saying the tool lacks it.

Plans and prices on these pages move quickly. Open each linked page before you pay.

Questions

Questions on AI writing tools

What are the best AI writing tools for work?

It depends on where you write. Scrubbr and Grammarly work across apps, Fyxer and Superhuman in email, Wispr Flow and Lemon by voice, ChatGPT and Claude in chat, and Jasper for marketing teams. We make Scrubbr, so check each tool's own page before you pay.

Is there an AI writing assistant that works in every app on Mac?

Yes. Scrubbr writes at your cursor in any app with a text cursor, on Mac and Windows, using your email and chat as context. Wispr Flow says it works "anywhere you can type", by voice, and Grammarly lists desktop apps for Mac and Windows.

What is a good Jasper alternative for B2B marketers?

Jasper is built for marketing teams, with Brand Voice and a browser extension. Scrubbr is an alternative that writes at your cursor in LinkedIn, Webflow and Google Docs, with your product facts and brand voice guide in its knowledge base. Claude and ChatGPT are chat alternatives.

Which of these AI writing tools are free?

Grammarly, Fyxer, Wispr Flow, Claude and ChatGPT list a Free plan, and Lemon says "Free to start". Superhuman's Free plan covers Grammarly, Docs and Go, and we did not see Mail on it. Scrubbr is free for 3 days with no card, then paid. Free plans have limits, so read each plan page.

Which of these tools read my email and calendar for context?

Scrubbr reads Gmail, Outlook, Slack, Microsoft Teams, Google Chat, Google Calendar, Outlook Calendar and Granola, plus your CRM and knowledge base. Claude names Slack, Gmail, Google Calendar and Microsoft 365 connectors. Superhuman says its Email Assistant uses your inbox, calendar and the web, and Fyxer reads your past emails.

Why is Scrubbr first on this list?

We make Scrubbr and wrote this page, so it goes first. It is not a ranking, and Scrubbr has its own "where it falls short". Each other tool's facts link to its own pages.
